FAQs
Copyediting Service
Copyediting typically comes ahead of proofreading. I will still check the spelling, punctuation, and grammar of your document, but will pay particular attention to its structure and phrasing. When copyediting I will prioritse the preservation of your writerly voice, all the while ensuring that the work is clear and reads well for its intended purpose.
Copyediting tasks include:
- Highlighting words, phrases or sentences that might need rephrasing for clarity and suggesting possible substitutions.
- Ensuring that the structure of the document is as clear as possible, paying attention to paragraphing and signposting elements such as headings, notes, and references.
- Correcting or querying anything that seems to be an error, including misspelled names, misused words, and inconsistent arguments.
- Cross-checking any Table of Contents and Lists of Figures etc. to ensure they match the headings, subheadings, and captions used in the text.
- Checking that the text is presented consistently, including capitalisation, abbreviations, and hyphenation, using a style sheet to show editorial decisions.
- Checking the layout of quotations, lists, tables, figures, and illustrations to ensure they follow a consistent style.
- For academic work, ensuring that references are formatted accurately and follows your preferred style guide.
- Performing basic fact-checking to make sure the content is as accurate as possible (note that substantiative fact-checking is beyond the scope of copyediting).
- Where required, coding or tagging the text ahead of typesetting.
I can work with both UK and US English, and can use your preferred style guide (including, but not limited to, APA, Chicago, MHRA, and MLA), house style, or brand guidelines. If you are not following a specific style, I can help you to develop a suitable style guide for your project or brand.
Deliverables:
In Word, I will use track changes and, where relevant, comments for clarification and context, or to offer suggestions and guidance. Upon completion, I will send you two documents, one with track changes included, and a second, ‘clean’, copy, with all track changes accepted.
I will also return an editorial style sheet, which will track layout, formatting, spelling, and other relevant features of the text observed during editing.
Rates:
£13 – £17 per 1,000 words.
