Hello! My name’s Rachel Gregory Fox. I have been working with the written word for over a decade within the Higher Education sector, and now work as a freelance proofreader, copyeditor and indexer. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.
I have a PhD in English, and have taught at several universities, including Lancaster University, Queen Mary, University of London and the University of Kent. My research has mainly focused on postcolonial literature and culture, and I have published two books, including my monograph, (Re)Framing Women in Post-Millennial Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran: Remediated Witnessing in Literary, Visual, and Digital Media (Routledge, 2022) and an edited collection Post-Millennial Palestine: Literature, Memory, Resistance (Liverpool University Press, 2021), which I co-edited with my friend and colleague Dr Ahmad Qabaha, An-Najah National University, Palestine. I have also published several peer-reviewed articles, including ‘Roots and routes: Literary archaeologies of British museums in contemporary Black and Asian poetry’ (Literature, Critique, and Empire Today, 2024), and ‘Marketing stories: Writing with faith and reading in search of spirituality in Elif Shafak’s fiction’ (Journal of Postcolonial Writing, 2023).
Having recently completed a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at the University of Kent, I am putting the finishing touches to my next book Narration, Crisis, and Care: The UK’s Hostile Environment, 2012-2022. I have previously held editorial roles at Postcolonial Text and Women’s Contemporary Writing and have organised various events, including several storytelling workshops with Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN).

When I’m not tapping away at my laptop or scribbling in my notepad, I can often be found reading a book or experimenting in the kitchen. If my toddler’s about, he likes to get involved with whatever I’m baking. When it’s not raining, my partner and I like to take our son out exploring. A pebbly beach is one of our favourite places to go, though my son loves the swings at the local park just as much.
